You’ll find roses in nearly every corner of the globe. They’re one of the worlds best flowers and Nigel shows us the beautiful combination of varieties at Centennial Park. He discusses the importance of pruning at this time of the year and how to do so.

• This Sydney park is nearly 100-years old, with some roses being more than 50-years old. Nige speaks to one of the horticulturalists at Centennial Park about tips on pruning.
• If you’re in a cold area that gets frost you want to wait until the last frost goes. Frost knocks the fresh pruning back.
• You also want the nice angle when you prune to get the right airflow through the plant because they are quite susceptible to some fungal diseases. Try prune to outwards facing buds so you maintain the shape of the plant.
• Centennial Park also use lime sulfur as a product for after pruning to clean up the scale and help with the fungal problems but try to do this before the leaf buds open up too much because this can burn your new leaves.
