Spring is such a wonderful time of the year. With warming days and longer daylight hours, plants really start to grow stronger and this means that you really have a huge demand of nutrients coming out of the soil. Today Trev gives us some spring tips for around you garden.

  • A lot of people think of spring as the time of the year for flowers but it’s also the time for growth. This is the time you get out and start trimming up your favourite plants to keep them in shape. This is particularly important with hedges but even small plants will benefit from a trim at the moment.
  • Weeds are a problem now, especially seeds germinating garden beds. Mulching the top soil at least 10cms deep with a chunky mulch is a great way to suppress seed growth. Mulches insulate the soil from heat and they smother weed seeds out, they also reduce evaporation so you don’t have to water as often to get a stunning garden.
  • Weeds in lawns can be much more problematic. Weed n Feed sprays are one way to control broad leaf, annual grasses and weeds like the prickly bindie but you can hand weed a lot of these, if you do use a hose on make sure it’s the right one.
  • This time of the year is the best time of the year to get out planting. If you’re planting out veggies or herbs, adding blood and bone is a great addition however if you’re planting trees, shrubs (or even if you’ve got an existing one) using planting tablets is a brilliant way to go.
  • Lastly remember it’s a great time to propagate your own plants. Splitting clumping plants, dividing canes and planting them and new lawn are all great activities to undertake this time of the year.
