Depending where you are located in this amazing country of ours you will be either ready to plant now or very soon plant out a crop of Tomatoes just in time for summer salads and sauces. Trev takes us through the rules we must follow for spring planting.
- The varieties you choose are often subject to the area you grow in, you can grow from seed or seedling but before you do anything make sure your garden is prepared properly, it’s the difference between getting results or living with disappointment.
- There’s a couple of rules with Tomatoes, and most vegetables before you plant. Never plant them in exactly the same spot you grew them in the year before unless your replacing 60 to 70% of the soil and you’re sure there was no disease in the older plants at the end of the season.
- Remember always plant them in a sunny open spot that allows for some air movement through the plant.
- Always cultivate the soil thoroughly before planting and look to stimulate it, which can be done by adding a seaweed tonic. The reason it’s important? If the soil microbes are booming along strongly they will be connecting with emerging roots as they grow. These are like nerve endings triggered into life stimulating strong healthy grow of the plant.
- One of the best things you can do before planting any seedlings out is to soak them in Seasol first, this arrests any root damage setting the plant back. A couple of minutes in a bucket of water is all they need.
- Then plant them out burying the plant a bit deeper than the current soil level… there’s very few plants you’d ever do this with but with tomatoes it will trigger even more root development and a quicker establishment.
- Next and most importantly, for 6 weeks ideally twice a week get the watering can out, mix this specially designed mixture of Seasol for Fruit and Flowers in it, apply over the foliage and the soils surface. It’s absorbed into the plant through both the leaves and the roots and the combined effect with the magic of Seasol and some other added ingredients is exceptionally strong growth and rapid expansion of the plant.
- Try to prune your tomatoes and train it up a solid stake. Once its established to the top of the stake you can stop upward growth by pinching it out or add additional stakes and grow lateral stems across the plant. But that's a while away yet!
