Wisteria

Episode: 13
Title: Wisteria
Broadcast: Nov 11th
Presenter: Melissa King

Breathtaking is the one word that comes to mind when we think about the beautiful Wisteria floribunda and when it’s in full bloom it’s the absolute star of the garden. Today Mel visits a stand out variety.

  • This magnificent archway was planted in 1999 and 12 years later the owners measured the longest flower they’d ever seen- a whopping 1620mm in length.
  • The Japanese Wisteria blooms through late spring. The gorgeous flowers are followed by attractive bean like pods in summer, which can persist in winter.
  • The timber and steel archway was specifically built to really show off the shower curtain and is an essential theme which links parts of the display garden at Alowyn Gardens together.
  • On a smaller scale at home you could use it to climb up walls, arbors, pergolas and fences- just make sure you provide it with a really sturdy support because this beauty can get up to 9mt tall.
  • Japanese Wisteria thrives in full sun/part shade but you’ll get the best display in a sunny position. Just be sure to grow it in a spot where you can really show off those flowers.
