DIY Deck Maintenance

Episode: 13
Title: DIY Deck Maintenance
Broadcast: Nov 11th
Presenter: Nigel Ruck & Zac Hayes

What a wonderful time of year this is. The gardens are looking great, we can spend more time in them and more outdoor entertaining with the longer days. It’s important to make sure your outdoor area is up to scratch and that includes your deck.

  • After all of the furniture is removed from your deck you need to give it a good wash. A high pressure water cleaner will save you a lot of time but a normal garden hose with and a bucket of water is fine.
  • The next step is to use a deck cleaner. Scrub that in hard and that’ll get rid of any stains from previous coatings. This solution should be left on for around 10-15 minutes before being washed off thoroughly.
  • Let the deck dry and time to start oiling. Do all the fiddly bits with a brush and then the rest with a pad later on.
  • For the main deck we’re using the lambs wool applicator for the oil, which is perfect for the job. Working with the grain and 2-3 boards at a time. It’s important to have an oiling plan in place (the last thing you want to do is get yourself locked in!)
