Now is the time to be picking seedlings up from your local garden centre. As the soil warms the starter plants roots grow quickly through moist soil and establish well. If there’s one problem some people have when planting new seedlings, it’s the roots being damaged in the planting process with young seedlings dying before the can get started.
- There’s a couple of great cheats; first know how to remove your seedlings properly. The design that goes into punnets accounts for removing the plants as easily as possible. So, if you pinched the cell on both sides the seedling will simply slide out of the punnet with little if any root damage.
- Another tip that definitely has a significant benefit is soaking the seedlings for a minute before removing them in a bucket of Seasol. The seaweed is well known in assisting plants to recover from any transplant and/ or root damage that may occur, and at the same time it stimulates new feeder root growth.
- Lastly don’t forget to feed and water your seedlings and repeat.
