Repairing the Lawn

This is the perfect time of year for lawn maintenance, as your lawns are just hitting their growth stride.
- Thatch is a build-up of vegetative matter, such as old clippings, that sits under the surface of your lawn. This turns the lawn spongey, making it difficult to mow, and blocks air, water and nutrients from entering the soil. This results in a poor soil, and an unhealthy lawn.
- You can hire a scarifying machine to remove the thatch before you rake it up. After doing this, your lawn will look half dead, but if you simply follow this up with fertilising and regular watering, your lawn will recover quickly. It’s important to make sure your timing is right – late spring or early summer is best, when your soil is actively growing at the soil temperature is 15 degrees or more.
- Compacted areas, caused by heavy use, can also prevent air, water and nutrients from entering your soil, leading to your lawn to dying off and weeds moving in. You can stop this from happening by aerating your lawn, either with a garden fork for smaller areas or a coring machine. Make sure to follow up with a sandy dress to fill the holes, then fertilise and water in.
- You have to be sure that you’re using the right fertiliser for your lawn, such as Powerfeed Lawn Feed. This gives your lawn a balance of slow and quick release nutrients, beneficial soil microbes and seaweed, helping to properly stimulate the roots – simply apply it every 6 weeks from the start of spring to the end of autumn.
