If you’re interested in some different designs to try out in your garden, you might want to take a look at hanging baskets.

  • When starting out with your hanging baskets, you have to be sure you’re using the right baskets – fibre lined wire baskets are always a good choice. Next up, pick out a top-quality potting mix, and then put in some water storing crystals as well as a block of coco peat.
  • When it comes to choosing the plants for your hanging baskets, it is important to have variety. If your baskets are in a sunny area, options such as succulents or Australian natives are available to you.
  • Fill the bottom of your basket with straight coco peat, as this will hold water and nutrients in your basket longer. Then fill 20% of the basket with potting mix, before placing your plants in. You can then lightly fill in the gaps with potting mix, though it is important not to press it into the gaps. Gently water the basket, then top up with potting mix again.
  • The nutrient demand here will be huge compared to standard multi-planted pots, so you have to be sure that you are properly feeding your plants. A weekly feed with Powerfeed will make a huge difference to the lushness and size of your plants.
  • Planting now means your plants will look excellent coming into December and January. Look at this as a 12-month project – replenish them every 12 months by taking the plants out, splitting them and filling the basket with new soil.
