If you’re looking for a small garden project, then consider setting up a little terrarium. They are easy maintenance, look beautiful and make a lovely ornamental feature to a table or benchtop both indoors and out.
- You can use almost any glass container to create a planted terrarium display ‐ from the smaller jam and mason jars right up to an old fishbowl. You can also find more professional looking terraria from most good nurseries and garden centres.
- Before the soil, make sure you put down a layer of activated charcoal, this will help remove any odours and reduce excess water at the bottom of the jar which can cause the roots to rot and ultimately lead to the plant dying.
- A few plant options are Baby Tears, Hare’s Foot Fern and Syngonium. Choose plants that vary in colour and texture and that are suited to the terrarium environment.
- Osmocote has a controlled release fertiliser specifically designed for pots, planters and indoors, which is ideal for ferns and leafy potted plants just like those in terrariums.
- Osmocote Controlled Release Fertliser contains all the nutrients your plants need, including essential trace elements and minerals. It delivers these to your plants slowly and when they need it.
- This fertilizer only needs to be applied every six months and can be used on a range of plants.
- Osmocote reduces the need for watering as it contains a wetting agent that helps the soil hold onto moisture, encouraging deeper, stronger root growth. This is important in a terrarium as the plants require just enough water to keep the roots damp.
- Use a fine sprayer to water your plants and check the moisture levels once a week!
