Upcycling is a great way to add a splash of personality to your garden. You can use anything that might be lying around the house. Bonnie-Marie shows us how to get creative with some garden DIY.

  • You can use any old containers you may find lying around the house, just make sure they have good drainage points for water to run freely. If you do use closed containers, just use horticulture charcoal or stones at the base.
  • When upcycling, use a mixture of plants and look for three key elements. First is colour – use plants that contrast against each other. Second is height – choose plants that suit the container size, keeping it balanced. And third, make sure the plants are compatible so they grow together happily.
  • Be sure to use a premium quality potting mix like Osmocote. The red ticks on the bag show it is certified to meet the Australian Standard for Premium Potting Mixes, it will maintain peak condition without compacting for two years, so you know it is good for your plants.
  • Osmocote also contains controlled release fertiliser and growth stimulants. These help build stronger roots, healthier growth and will feed your plants for up to four months, so you won’t have to worry about a thing.
  • Osmocote potting mixes are made from composted pine bark, which is a renewable and sustainable resource. It contains coir fibre which holds the moisture and nutrients. The added wetting agent improves moisture penetration and retention. It retains it so well that this mix can hold up to 100% more moisture than other mixes.
  • When designing your pot, place the lower growers towards the front and the taller to the back so the eye travels upwards. Once planted, give them a good watering.
  • To keep these plants happy during the warmer months give them a deep soak 2-3 times a week. After that check and feel if the soil is dry before the next watering.
