In the suburb of Brunswick East, just 20 minutes away from the Melbourne CBD, lies the Merri Corner Community Garden, a small patch of green life amongst the suburban sprawl.

  • There is a lot of colour in this garden. An example is borage, which is great to track pollination because its edible flowers change from royal blue to pink after the bees have come and taken the pollen.
  • Here at the Merri Corner Community Garden a variety of fruit trees have been planted all along the fence line: it’s a great idea you could use at home too.
  • Calendula is an annual plant but mostly a winter grower; in the heat of the warmer months it can show signs of stress like rust, which can disperse through the garden when water hits the spores on the leaves. This can be treated with a fungicide but if you want to stay natural like in this community garden, rip the plant off and put in something new instead.
  • Community gardens are a great way to meet new people and broaden your garden knowledge at the same time.
