The Spathiphyullum, or peace lily, is an extremely popular plant – and with good reason.

  • When choosing a Spathiphyullum, you want to look out for a few things. Make sure the centre growth of the plant is in a nice thick clump, and make sure it doesn’t sway too much from side to side – this means it is well rooted.
  • Pick a pot that is around 20cm – don’t go too big, as this will help to reduce the chance of overwatering. When re-potting, always go 1-2 sizes bigger.
  • The flowers that emerge in spring and summer are truly spectacular, standing tall above the foliage.
  • Make sure to use a good potting mix, such as Scotts Osmocote Premium Potting Mix. The red ticks means that it meets the Australian standard for a good potting mix.
  • This potting mix contains a slow release fertiliser and a wetting agent – this will help get your plant off to a good start.
  • There is no need to tease the roots of the plant – they should already be nice and healthy.
  • Caring for peace lilies isn’t too difficult, though they do prefer to be positioned in a nice, well-lit part of your home. Keep them away from hot summer windows however, as the this can burn the foliage.
  • Apply a slow release fertiliser every 3 months in the peak growing seasons.
