A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Augustusburg Castle is known for its stunning Baroque-style gardens. Trev takes you back into the gardens to show you more.
- The gardens and castle are located about an hour from Cologne by Car and represent one of the finest examples of Baroque style garden design.
- The grounds were first set aside for the purpose of being a hunting lodge so there’s a combination of manicured gardens and then a wooded garden forested area that's lovely to explore as well.
- Designed in the unique Baroque style the castles is considered one of the finest example of Germanic architecture surviving today.
- Inside there’s museums and a considerable back catalogue of historic collections which will having you spending the whole day there!
- The gardens are interspersed with delicate ornamental boxwood flower beds. The beds are framed with borders, planted with summer blooms.
- These 18th century Baroque gardens were created by Dominique Girard, modelled on French designs. Girard’s understanding of landscape decor was exceptional!
- His influences from his master who designed the famous gardens of Versailles are evident here as the formality of this Baroque design remains perfect today nearly 400 years since it was built.
