Nurturing Natives
Story: Nurturing Natives
Episode: 17
Presenter: Neville Passmore
Air Date: 12th December 2020
Neville shares an easy way to accommodate the low phosphate requirements of Australia’s beautiful and diverse array of native plants.
- There are over twenty-four thousand different species of native Australian plants
- Many gardeners are cautious about planting natives because they have a reputation for being difficult.
- Plants like those of the protea family, including banksias, grevilleas, and hakeas, have evolved in low phosphate soils, so applying regular fertilisers can burn them off.
- Scotts have developed a range of potting mixes and fertilisers that cater to this low phosphate diet. These can be used on all Australian natives.
- Apply Scotts Osmocote for Natives twice a year to promote even growth and flowering.
- Osmocote slowly releases its nutrients over the course of 6 months, so there’s no wastage or leaching into waterways.
