There is nothing better than homegrown food, and the finger lime is a great option to grow in your own garden.
- Native to sub-tropical rainforests along the border of Queensland and New South Wales, finger limes are an extraordinary bush food, growing as an understory shrub or tree.
- Finger limes can be grown in other climates, such as in Perth.
- The ornamental, finger-shaped fruit is through to have the widest range of colour variation within the citrus family, making it exciting for the home gardener who can grow different coloured cultivars.
- Finger limes are rich in Vitamins C & E, folate and potassium, and can be used anywhere lemon or lime might be added. They work well as an acidic splash in Ceviche.
- It is important to try and mimic their natural sub-tropical habitat. Finger limes are best placed in a semi-sheltered spot, where they receive filtered sunlight. Make sure to protect them from strong winds.
- Plant in Premium Quality potting mix, before using Seasol to help the plant settle. Feed with an all-round controlled release fertiliser.
- Finger lime plants are quite prickly, so be sure to keep them out of reach of children or pets.
- Finger limes are a great source of fibre, and help to build your immunity to common ailments such as colds and flu.
