Do you struggle to grow plants because your garden is too shaded? Bonnie reveals a plant variety that is beautiful, hardy, and thrives in shaded areas.

  • Hosta (Hosta spp.) also known as the Plantain Lily is a clumping herbaceous perennial. It is part of the Liliaceae family and is native to Japan, China and Korea.
  • Hosta’s are hardy plants that are grown mostly for their spectacular foliage, which comes in a range of textures, colours and sizes. They also grow well in shaded areas.
  • Some of the colours Hosta’s produce are greens, blues, and greys, while other styles are variegated of yellow, green, or white markings.
  • In Summer they produce mauve to lavender or white lily-shaped flowers on stalks rising above the leaves. Hosta’s are very long-lived under the right conditions.
  • There are many varieties of Hosta’s including; the Hosta Fotuneii, Hosta June, Hosta Grandiflora, Beach-Boy, Robert Frost, and the Hosta mini-Hideout with slightly curled leaves with white and green variegation, a variety perfect for containers.
