When it comes to flavors, few are as divisive as Coriander or Cilantro. Some love it; some hate it.
- There’s a genetic reason as to why some hate the taste of cilantro. These people have a variation in a group of olfactory-receptor genes that allows them to strongly perceive the soapy-flavored aldehydes found in cilantro leaves.
- Studies showing that nearly 20% of the population experiences soapy-tasting cilantro. But interestingly repeated consumption of Coriander in small amounts will see you suddenly change to love it.
- Coriander originates from higher, cooler regions in mountainous china. It has been used all over the world for 2000 years.
- Coriander prefers more relaxed conditions, as its best time to grow is in winter. However, in Summer look out for the No Bolt varieties.
- The plant's name is Coriander, and the foliage is called Cilantro.
- This plant is best grown in cooler conditions and in a pot.
- For a different variety, try Saw Tooth Coriander. The flavor is the same, but it's better suited to hotter drier conditions, so ideal for an environment like Perth.
