With topdressing a lawn, it isn’t about providing additional nutrients, it’s about diluting the organic make up of your soil profile! Allow Michael to explain.
- When it comes to topdressing, using a good quality free draining Lawn Sand that has the correct amounts of sand, silt and clay is important to the ongoing performance of your lawn.
- Topdressing with composts or soils too high in organic material can be fraught with danger.
- The organic fines in these type of landscape mixes can filter down over time and block the movement of water to where it is needed the most, in the rootzone.
- Topdressing should also only be carried out after either coring your lawn or giving it a dethatch renovation.
- Spreading sand straight over a full cover of dense lawn will lead to further issues of organic layering in the future and provide another barrier to nutrients, air, and water infiltration.
- If topdressing to level uneven areas be mindful that some grass varieties do not like to have the entire leaf of the plant covered and may perish if unable to access light for energy.
