Story: The Perfect Potted Plant - Nigel’s guide to choosing the right pots
Episode: 1

Nigel goes in deep into different pot-sizes for the right jobs, and how the right pot could make all the difference when it comes to planting your favourite plants.

  • It’s important to know more about the plant or tree you are trying to plant before deciding on the right pot and type! For example, if your plant is suitable to indoor, outdoor, full sun, or if it is a fruit tree or vegetable.
  • These components will help in determining the size and material suitable to both your pot and plant. Another factor to keep in mind when deciding the pot is its location in your home. Ensure it has access to water, or being mindful of if it is positioned in a windy area.
  • Larger plants like palms, Olives and Lemon trees need larger pots for growth. They will be more stable due to their heavier weight, less likely to blow over in the wind. The overall scale of the pot to plant is also a key factor - a large plant in a small pot just looks weird.
  • Smaller pots work well with equally smaller plants like herbs or small succulents. Most herbs and vegetables like water, so a non-porous option is good, or else seal the inside of the pot with pot sealer.
  • Clustering pots together is a great design technique. You will often see 3 pots of differing height in plenty of design photos, and the same philosophy can apply to plants and plant pots. If you’ve got a sense for it, give it a shot.
