Succulent Propagation
Story: The Perfect Potted Plant - Succulent Propagation
Episode: 3
Presenter: Rayne Ang
Air Date: 19th August
Rayne gives us a crash course on propagating our favourite succulents and cacti.
- Succulents have extra adaptive systems that allow for water storage in the desert, including water storage in stems like the cactus. For that reason, it can be useful to know how to propagate your succulents.
- Leaf propagation works with echeveria and other thick, juicy-leaved succulents. Gently twisting the healthy leaf downwards and to the sides to remove it. Make sure the leaf is fully intact and plump, otherwise it will not be able to propagate
- Plant healthy leaf onto the surface of a pot full of soil and sprinkle a few drops of water weekly. Over the next few weeks, roots will grow out and bury into the soil and a baby plantlet will emerge!
- Stem propagation requires a clean pair of scissors or a knife. This method is for plants that have grown extra tall and only the head is necessary, while still propagating new pups from the stems.
- Snip about 1cm below the lowest leaf and keep the plants aside in a nice dry place away from pests, as the fresh wounds callus and heal. After 2-3 days, the head can be planted into a new plot and it will eventually start rooting over the next few weeks.
