Camellias have been around for tens of thousands of years, and are really popular garden plants all over the world. Nigel takes you to the Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens, which boasts a plethora of these vibrant plants.

  • Camellias come in all sorts of different colours, as there are thousands of different cultivars.
  • Nigel meets up with Kevin Brown, who’s a bit of a camellia expert.
  • At the botanic gardens, they’ve got a lot of camellias, which can be used in different ways: for instance, small leaf camellias make great hedges.
  • Camellia Japonica, on the other hand, is a tree, and is better suited to semi-shade. To get the most out of your flowers, Kevin recommends removing some of the buds to allow flowers more space to bloom.
  • The Garden also has some Camellia Reticulatas, which can grow up to 15 metres in height. These plants are known for the prominent venation in their leaves. They too prefer semi shade, through the red variety can tolerate full sun.
  • Lastly, Kevin shows us the Tea bush, which changed civilization through its tiny leaves that you can use to make tea.
  • With so many different varieties of camellia, you’re bound to find the right one for your garden.
