Native Animals in The Garden
Story: Native Animals in The Garden
Episode: 11
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Air Date: 30 October 2021
Most of Australia's wildlife is found nowhere else in the world, making its conservation even more important. Trevor visits Perth’s iconic Caversham Wildlife Park to learn how to create a wildlife-friendly garden.
- One of the main problems our native possums face is habitat fragmentation through urbanisation which results in the loss of suitable refuge sites and natural food sources.
- Caversham Wildlife Park has a great collection of different possum species and spends a lot of time sharing their knowledge with visitors.
- One of the ways we can share spaces with our native marsupials is by planting native trees and plants for them to inhabit, trees that fruit will naturally provide a food source for them.
- Also, putting up a hollowed log or nest box is a great way to provide a new home for the possum other than your roof.
- Nets over fruiting trees and barriers around your plants are good ideas as well as, regularly pruning branches that could provide a runway for possums to your roof space.
