West Aussie summers are infamous for the heat and harshness and as gardeners, we must do our bit to protect our valuable investment from the worst summer has to offer. The soil is the critical component in the wellbeing of the garden plants and left unprotected will make the garden suffer.

  • The top 2-300mm of garden soil contains the bulk of the feeder roots of plants, the ones that draw up nutrients and moisture. It is also home to the critical microbial life that helps keep soils healthy and alive. It is this layer that is most susceptible to damage from the blistering summer sun.
  • Protecting your soil is as simple as applying a layer of waterwise mulch. Using a fully composted organic mulch will protect, maintain and nourish the top soil.
  • The composting process destroys weed seeds and plant pathogens so they are not spread around your garden. The mulch needs to be applied at least 50-70mm thick and should always been thinned out around the base of plants to avoid collar rot.
  • When selecting a mulch, check that it meets Australian Standards and that it is a waterwise approved product to ensure that it will work effectively to keep the soil cool, slowing evaporation, reducing plant stress and using much less water.
  • Bailey’s Moisture Mulch ticks all these boxes and the particle-sized mix in the mulch will allow water from your retic or rain to pass quickly through it and into the soil below, where it’s needed.
  • When applied correctly, it will even suppress weed seed germination, meaning less ugly weeds in the garden and less work for the gardener.
  • A freshly mulched garden always looks great but when it is mulched with a top quality, locally produced mulch that meets Australian standards and is certified waterwise, it will maintain and nourish the top soil to ensure that the gardens have every chance to thrive right through the long, hot summer ahead.
