Community gardens are usually a great place to bring people together, but with Covid-19 changing the way we do things, North Perth Community Garden has had to adapt to a new way of working.
- Community gardens are great places to visit for both physical and mental reasons. While group activities can’t go ahead, gardens can still be visited.
- North Perth Community Garden has plot members and communal garden members.
- There are just under 40 individual plots, similar to old English allotments. A whole household could be running each plot. There is also a childcare centre that brings children to the garden.
- The gardeners here learn from each other, sharing information and techniques. They’re all passionate and interested.
- The garden has an eclectic mix of edible plants, with people growing food with links to their cultural origins – lemongrass has its roots buried deep in Asian cuisine.
- Late autumn is delivering a bountiful harvest across the garden, including the sweet potato. This a great ground cover, and the fresh shoots are a rich source of nutrients and antioxidants – throw them into a stir-fry.
- While some community gardens are temporarily closed, there are still many that have remained open. Check with your local council to see if there are any near you!
