Trevor finds more of Singapore’s best greenery shops and florists as he explores more auspicious plants to decorate your home with.
- Indoor plants in some Asian countries like Singapore are often imbued with different cultural meanings, hoping to bring good luck, prosperity, longevity and wealth into the home.
- The chances jade plant is auspicious in bringing luck and love to the family, and hence should be positioned close to the front of the house. Growing them works best in a well lit position with not too much water - about a cup of water a week is fine.
- For a little lottery luck, the lucky bamboo is a must have. It’s actually a beautiful indoor plant if grown in soil, but they’re often grown in water instead. Remember to give them food, which can be done with a small amount of liquid fertiliser crystals dissolved and added to water every 2-3 weeks.
- The desert rose or wealth plant is actually called an Adenium, and they come with brightly coloured flowers, perfect for the window sill. If it gets too much water, it will drop its leaves, to keep it in a pot, take it out on sunny days but bring it in on wet ones.
- Citrus are well known to bring luck and good health, as the fruit is rich in vitamins and minerals, but not everyone has room for citrus trees, so look for dwarf varieties or smaller growing trees like calamondins or cumquats.
