It’s prime autumn season and Trevor takes the opportunity to show us some of his favourite harvests out of his garden.

  • Snail creepers are an autumnal bloom that only blossoms for about three days. They are incredibly fragrant and change colour from cream to mauve, eventually to golden yellow before falling over. They are the perfect edible flower when frozen in ice cubes and slipped into cocktails.
  • The Tamarillo, also known as the tree tomato, is related to our regular gourmet tomatoes, and are actually of the same genus, but have an incredibly unusual fruit because of its natural savoury flavour.
  • Dragon fruits are an epiphytic cactus. The change in weather around the autumn time with shortening days trigger blooms at night, followed by the plump fruit. They are deep-red purple inside, are exceptionally good for you, and very easy to eat, like pudding.
  • Custard apples are one of the more unusual fruits, and are known as a health tonic. They’re rich in fibre and contain antioxidants known to fight free radical cells associated with chronic diseases, cancer and heart disease. They’re also sweet and custard-like in texture when ripe.
  • Among the other blooms in Trevor’s garden are the citrus fruits like limes, Meyer and Lisbon lemons and multiple oranges, Strawberry Guavas that bloom in such abundance that it’s recommended to jam them for preservations, and mangoes.
