Autumn Growing with Neville

Story: Family Gardening - Autumn Growing with Nev
Episode: 12
Presenter: Neville Passmore
Air Date: 3rd June

Neville wastes nothing as he takes his kitchen waste, office shreddings and even chicken coop… excrement, and turns it into an incredibly nutritious compost.

  • Setting up free standing composts bin using 400 litre units can sometimes be controversial as they may produce stagnant and smelly mixes, but keeping to some basic rules will avoid this.
  • Choose a sunny spot and use soil as a base. Add a set of lungs to keep air circulating through the heap. It can be quite easy to do this with a set of PVC Pipes and a hold rill. Three pipes together make it freestanding.
  • Add worms. A kilo of compost worms will be plenty, and they can eat their way through their own body weight of kitchen and garden waste every day.
  • Mix partially composted material, garden prunings, shredded paper and any kitchen scraps. It’s important to mix in waste water from the kitchen with your food scraps, as Hydration is key to keep the process from stalling.
  • Finish it with any chicken coop waste. Keep the contents of your bin moist, well ventilated and active with a mix of ingredients is the key to successful aerobic composting.
