Nigel is back in Trev’s garden - certainly not for the first time, nor the last - to add a little spice with a few pot plants down the outdoor steps.

  • Plants of different varieties certainly benefit from having the correct pot size. It can affect drainage, growth and even just how the pot looks. Get too small of a pot for too big of a plant and it just looks strange.
  • For example, the litreage, capacity and shape of the pot to suit a fruit tree or shrub-like a ficus or a native like a dragon tree is important. White, sweetly scented, circular-shaped flowers with narrow petals adorn this nocturnal species.
  • It has flat growth and long, spineless branches that are modern stems. They like morning sun, light or filtered light, but dislike hot afternoon sun, which will yellow the leaves.
  • Orchid cacti come in many colours like hot pink and fire engine red and grow best from leaf cuttings, which can be pressed straight into the garden bed, with no need to root. Morning sun will increase flower numbers, and they dislike overwatering and prefer mild winters. Feed during spring with mild liquid feed.
  • Epiphullums are easy to grow in hanging baskets or supported in a large pot with stakes or trellis. It flowers in late spring through late summer, large specimens can produce several crops of flowers.
