Onion Tribe Planting

Story: Onion Tribe Planting

Air Date: 30th March 2024

Neville shows us how easy it is to grow members of the onion tribe at home, using store bought veggies.

  • Autumn is ideal for planting members of the onion family, and they’re easy to find at your local grocery store.
  • Purchase locally grown garlic clusters rather than bleached imported ones, then break off individual garlic corms and plant them 2cm deep in well-drained, compost-enriched soil.
  • Shallots require planting slightly deeper, but follow the same process as the garlic.
  • For onions, cut the root off the bottom and plant just below the soil surface; after 6 months you should have a full size onion.
  • For spring onions, cut off the bottom white part with the roots, and plant them like seedlings; they will continue to produce when harvested, so leave the white part in the ground.
