  • Mangrove trees are crucial to both marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Although often highlighted in marine documentaries, their importance extends beyond the coast, playing a significant role in the stability of coastal environments and supporting biodiversity in the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Mangrove species possess special adaptations that allow them to thrive in harsh conditions. These adaptations include aerial roots and exposed breathing roots, which help them take in oxygen and remove excess salt. This makes them capable of surviving in salty waters and muddy tidal zones where most other plants would perish.
  • There are more than 80 species of mangrove trees, each with unique characteristics. Their aerial and structural roots create intricate and fascinating designs, making them visually stunning and ecologically vital for coastal life.
  • Mangroves act as natural barriers against storms, including cyclones, helping to protect coastal islands and communities. Their extensive root systems help stabilize soils and sediments, preventing erosion and reducing the impact of powerful waves.
  • Mangrove trees provide a safe haven for young marine creatures, including prawns and fish. The sheltered intertidal zones serve as nurseries, giving young marine life a place to grow and develop before venturing into the open ocean.
  • Palm Island, located in Far North Queensland, is home to these incredible trees. A visit to this beautiful island is an opportunity to explore the remarkable mangrove ecosystems that play such an essential role in both terrestrial and marine environments.
