Title: How to be Waterwise Indoors at Home
Broadcast: Sunday Jan 1 2016
Presenter: Chrissy Morrissy

Chrissy takes us to the most beautiful waterwise home, which is part of a water efficient home and apartment development. She takes us inside a home designed to be waterwise and with sustainability in mind.

  • Chrissy visits Eugienie Stockman, homeowner and Educator for Sustainable Living for The Green Swing. They discuss the development of this unique house, and how we can save water in indoors at our own homes.
  • The bathroom is a great place to start when it comes to water saving in the home. The shower alone uses 22% of all water in the house. Begin with a 4-minute shower, and install a water efficient showerhead .
  • Simple ways to recycle water in the bathroom include collecting surplus water from the shower in a bucket to tip over the garden when you’ve finished, and turning the tap off while you brush your teeth.
  • Dual flush toilets will save you around 80 litres per day.Make sure you keep an eye out for leaks and act quickly if you spot one. A leaking toilet can waste up to 9,000 litres a year if left untreated.
  • In the laundry, using a 4.5 WELS star rated front loader will reduce your water use by 35% compared to using a same sized top loader. Only ever wash when you have a full load. Also, connecting your washing machine to a small rainwater tank can save up to 20,000 litres of water a year.
  • In the heart of the home is the kitchen. When washing veggies, put the plug in the sink or use a big bowl or bucket. Opt for a dishwasher over handwashing, a dishwasher uses less water. Avoid pre-rinsing your dishes before loading them into the dishwasher and always remember to make sure you dishwasher is full.
  • Install water using fixtures and appliances in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry with the highest WELS star rating - 6-stars - and consider installing a grey water system and using the recycled water to water your garden.
