Natural control of snails and slugs

Story Title: Natural control of snails and slugs
TX Date: 29th September 2018
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Snails are extremely common at this time of year, and you want to make sure that they’re not getting into your veggie garden.

  • There are a few different variations of snail you might be dealing with – there is the tiny coastal snail, the classic garden snail, and the green snail
  • Snail pellets, and the chemical used in them, can be deadly. Not only will it kill your dogs extremely quickly, it is dangerous for humans as well. Instead of flushing through your body, the chemicals are stored in your body fat, only to re-emerge when you’re ill
  • For a more natural cure, spray copper or bluestone around your garden edges and over the plants. Snails have absolutely no tolerance to copper, so this will get them under control quickly
  • Unless the snails are actively affecting your vegetables, you should leave them untouched. Snails are a natural way of converting old leaves and litter into fertiliser for your plants
