Air Date: 9 October 2021
There are so many delicious foods you can grow at home and Spring is one of the best times of the year to be planting them. Trevor takes us into his garden to show off the most exotic edibles he has growing.
- The Babaco or Champagne fruit is zeppelin shaped and a distant member of the Papaya family, originating in South America in the cooler mountainous regions.
- The Babaco doesn't produce seed. Hence, it must be grown from cuttings or purchased at your local garden centre.
- The ‘champagne’ common name refers to the tingly sweet texture of the flesh. It’s prolific fruiting once established and is great in smoothies or with ice cream.
- The Paw Paw or Papaya tends to do well in warmer climates, and you can rarely grow both in the same garden.
- Spring is the time of year to be growing veggies, establishing tomatoes, and getting the greens growing.
- Feed your veggie patches with a controlled release fertilizer that is a highly balanced mix of 50+ macro and micro mineral nutrients and backed up with beneficial soil microbes.
- Apply your fertilizer now and there will be no need to feed again until December.
- Spring is a great time to plant mushroom kits, such as the button or portobello mushrooms which need to be placed in a cool dark position, or the exotic gourmet mushrooms, like oysters, which are best grown in a well-lit protected like this atrium.
- The Mushroom's growth varies by type but typically you will see the mycelium spreading and fruit developing after about 10 days.
