It's no surprise that there is an increased interest in growing Australian plants. They are stunning! Sue shares her top tips to make maintaining Australian Native Plants is easy.

• Gardening under established trees is one of the hardest positions to fill in the garden because the established trees tend to rob all the water and nutrients meant for the small plants.
• Not all natives are sensitive to fertiliser, it’s the phosphorous in many formulations that can cause plants of the Proteacea family to die.
• All natives will respond to having some fertiliser added to the hole, such as Powerfeed-All-Purpose, which is well suited to using on Grevilleas.
• Drench the hole with the fertiliser before planting and water plants in with a solution.
• Powerfeed-All-Purpose contains liquid compost that helps to break up clay whilst simultaneously, in sandy soils, holding the nutrients for plants.
• Another plant that will benefit from a Powerfeed application is the Leptospermum Starry Night.
• When selecting native plants for the garden, don’t only select for flowers, try to look at the foliage. Australian plants have a broad range of leaf forms, shapes and textures.
• Ongoing maintenance of natives is easy and helps to avoid having to get stuck into the garden and prune back hard every few years.
• Good maintenance advice is to nip the growth tip out of shrubs at different times of the year.
