Story: Native Animals in The Garden
Episode: 12
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Air Date: 6 November 2021

Trevor learns how to best create habitats that will attract birds into our gardens. These small changes in plant choices can have a wonderfully positive impact on wildlife conservation.

  • The team at Caversham Wildlife Park have been helping with the rehabilitation of at-risk animal populations and education programs to help educate the community.
  • Caversham Wildlife Park has a fascinating collection of native bird species which need certain conditions to thrive.
  • Having native plants and trees in your garden habitats will help these birds to thrive.
  • Adding a multi-layered habitat of ground covers, small and medium shrubs along with native trees to your garden will provide a recreation of their original habitat.
  • Having fresh water in your garden can be hugely beneficial to these bird species.
  • Giving birds food can have a negative impact on their health if it doesn't provide adequate nutrition.
  • Trees and shrubs will provide a food source for them. Placing a birdbath or other freshwater source in the garden will also give them much-needed reprieve from the hot weather.
  • Gums, Grevilleas, Kangaroo Paws and Banksias are readily accessible Australian native plants recommended to have in your garden.
  • Mature trees are required for nesting and protection. Hollow logs mounted in a younger tree will replicate nesting areas.
