Nev shows the importance of recycling in the garden! And, it’s simpler to do than you think!
- Taking food and gardening waste out of the rubbish system can help the planet by reducing methane gas emissions.
- Use a free-standing composting bin with an open lung in the centre. This will ensure good airflow throughout the mix to achieve better results.
- Set up a lung for all standing bins by using a PVC pipe and drilling several holes around the surface area. Then, position the pipe vertically and occasionally flush it out with a hose.
- The best option is to have a bucket full of kitchen scraps added to the system. Fill the bucket with water to keep the bin moisturised.
- Other items such as; garden prunes, fresh weeds and lawn clippings can also be added to the mix.
- Due to Perth’s sweltering dry summers, the compositing bins tend to dry out. To counteract this, add a dripline square connected to your irrigation system. This ensures that when your lawn gets a drink, so does the compost.
