  • One of the most challenging environments to grow plants is indoors on walls. The way they are secured – the type of system you use, and the plant selection are the first 2 challenges. The next is watering and the last is maintenance and this is a classic example of how you do it right, the Hotel in a garden The Park Royal Collection Pickering.
  • The sky gardens in the hotel are simply sublime and feature 4 main terraces overflowing with verdant foliage plants and tropical flowers. The main corridors use plants at every turn and the entry statement to the hotel this living piece of art.
  • The plants grow in a soilless media specially designed for these kinds of environments. The water supply and soil work together to sustain and support growth and one element few people consider is nutrition, plants on walls need to be fed too so liquid nutrients are added regularly to ensure the dark green look with foliage.
  • Lighting is important but your plant selection can help here too, members of the aroid family such as monstera, philodendrons and pothos all grow well in darker places because they are under canopy plants growing under the heavy shade of forest trees.
  • One handy tip is to avoid variegated foliage plants in darker places, the darker the spot, you will need larger leaf sizes and darker green foliage to succeed.
