Succulent Potting Mix

Story: Garden Revolutions - Succulent Potting Mix
Episode: 2
Presenter: Rayne
Air Date: 12th August

Rayne from the Garden Revolution shows us why our potted succulents are so finicky when it comes to watering, and how potting mix makes all the difference.

  • Potting mix that most succulents come in are actually excellent multipurpose soils for nurseries. Unfortunately, this doesn’t carry over nearly as well when it comes to our own homes, and the soil stays soggy for much longer.
  • This soggy environment encourages a lot of bugs, pests and diseases to fester, eventually causing rot and withering within our succulents.
  • Be sure to repot your succulents into a free-draining potting mix you can make for yourself with 4 simple ingredients: Potting soil, perlite, akadama and pumice, light, porous, easy rocks and clay to mix into your soil to ensure light drainage and just enough water retention
  • Mix them freely into a seperate container until the mixture clumps in your hands like peanuts. If you’re not happy with it, add more pumice until this texture is achieved.
  • Repot your succulent by first removing all the old nursery soil before choosing a cute small pot and burying the succulent’s roots in your new potting mix.
