Air plant accessories

Story: Air plant accessories
Episode: 6
Presenter: Rayne Ang
Air Date: 9th September

Rayne dives headfirst into the world of air plants, hanging plants that need no soil.

  • Also known as Valencias, air plants can be grown in virtually any climate. Instead of roots, their leaves have specially adapted white fibres known as trichrome that leech moisture out of the air around them.
  • Grow them in bright, indirect sunlight and good airflow, and give them a spray twice a week with water. Occasionally soak the especially dry ones overnight to keep them fully hydrated.
  • Their lack of roots means that air plants are perfect for decorative hanging in plenty of creative ways, on fishing lines, on iron decorations and suspended in the air on baskets and other metal wires.
  • With Rayne’s method, it’s even possible to create threaded, wearable air plants that allow you to literally wear your plants on you like a bracelet or necklace. Simple nylon string is all you need to thread your plant securely into a beaded bracelet or string band.
