Darren’s got 3 top tips for growing citrus trees.

  • With delicious fruit, perfumed flowers and glossy, dark green foliage, citrus trees are a must have for Australian gardeners. And by getting a few key factors right, citrus trees are easy and rewarding to grow.
  • Like all plants, the health of your citrus trees is directly tied to moisture and nutrients. Slightly acidic soil that has good capacity to hold on to moisture can promote growth.
  • In areas with sandy soils, adding compost, clay and aged animal manure is ideal. But with heavy clay soils dig plenty of compost, aged animal manure and coarse sand.
  • To promote healthy foliage, add a clay to the planting location with a control and release fertilizer to ensure its well fed, then, water in well.
  • Applying a seaweed solution will help the root system establish a strong foundation.
  • Citrus trees can also grow well in pots. Using a dwarf or semi dwarf root stock and a 30 – 60 litre pot and premium potting mix is all you need for citrus to flourish.
  • Once planted or potted, citrus trees require small amounts of regular maintenance. Fertilise in spring, summer and autumn to ensure the trees are adequately water to keep soil nice and moist.
  • Lastly, pest oil spray in spring & autumn can help get rid of citrus leaf miner, leaving your tree happy and healthy!
