The new Jala avocado is a game-changer, producing fruit three times the size of regular avocados with creamy, nutty flesh — perfect for home gardeners looking to enjoy fresh, giant avos in just a few years!
- Avocados are packed with heart-healthy fats, fibre, vitamins C, E, and K, plus 41% of your daily folate needs and 14% of magnesium — great for your heart, gut, and overall health.
- As evergreen shade trees, avocados can reduce local garden temperatures by up to 8°C on hot days — a lush, living way to beat the heat.
- Discovered in Queensland and released by Fleming’s Nursery, ‘Jala’ is a rare new avocado variety producing fruit three times the size of standard avocados, with creamy, nutty flesh that resists browning.
- While full-sized trees can reach 30 metres, dwarf forms (including Jala) are ideal for large pots or wine barrels — just plant in deep, free-draining soil, mulch well (but not against the trunk), and never let them dry out.
- Jala trees are currently limited and priced between $75–$100, fruiting within 3–5 years and producing their main crop in July–August.
- Autumn is the best time to plant — give your Jala tree time to establish before summer. Protect young trees from strong wind, water regularly, and you’ll be rewarded with giant avos perfect for morning toast bliss.
