JALA Avocado Tree

Story: JALA Avocado Tree
Episode: 2
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Air Date: 14 March 2026

Trevor discovers a giant new avocado variety that could transform backyard harvests and the future of Australian gardens.

  • Each year in Victoria, industry growers and retailers preview new plant varieties, helping determine the plants that will shape Australian gardens in the years ahead.
  • Flemings Nursery, a fourth-generation family business operating in Victoria and Queensland, has been introducing new fruit and ornamental plants to Australian gardeners for over 100 years.
  • After expanding into Queensland in 2015, Flemings broadened its focus beyond deciduous fruits to tropical crops such as avocados, quickly becoming one of Australia’s largest producers.
  • One of their most exciting discoveries is the Jala avocado, an Australian-bred giant variety producing fruit weighing between 750g and 1.3kg, far larger than the typical 150–200g avocado.
  • The Jala produces creamy, buttery fruit ideal for fresh eating, guacamole or smashed avocado, with mature trees growing around 7–10 metres high and producing 20–30 fruit per tree each season.
  • While the tree is self-fertile, planting a second avocado variety such as Shepard, Fuerte, Bacon or Sharwil can improve pollination and increase yields.
  • Avocados are highly nutritious and make excellent evergreen garden trees, performing best when planted in a sunny position with consistent moisture and good irrigation.
