Growing your own veggies at home can be very rewarding and beneficial for your family. It is very important to learn the watering requirements of your crops. Neville shows us an efficient way to grow and water your favourite produce.
Neville's Tips and Facts
- As a general rule vegetables are not in the waterwise category and that's why it's important to set up underground rainwater tanks to supply these raised beds through summer and early autumn.
- To make the best use of this precious resource I have used dripline hose to supply the water to the beds. This uses minimum water through delivering it at ground level at nighttime to reduce evaporation.
- A tap timer enables me to automatically control the system. These are great inventions that cost under $100 and can be programmed easily to water beds like this as required. Should we get rain then this sensor which is wired into the timer switches off the system until things dry out.
- Installing a tap timer will help you to control the amount of water you apply to your
lawn or garden so no water is wasted unnecessarily.
- Remember in summer any more than 15 minutes watering goes below the roots and is wasted
- A little bit of technology makes water efficient vegetable growing a tasty reality.
