Soil Improvement

Story Title: Soil Improvement
Episode: Food and Garden Special
Date: 4 April 2010
Presenter: Neville Passmore

Soil improvement is the key to healthy plants, Neville gets back to the basics of mulching, promoting healthy plant growth and waterwise practices.

Neville's Tips and Facts

  • Plant young plants, such as olive trees, with the best soil improvers and apply a layer of mulch 50 to 70 mm thick. This will save up to 70% of the water applied from being wasted, mainly though evaporation.
  • The ideal mulch should be chunky so that it's hard to walk on with bare feet. This means the water can quickly penetrate through to the soil.
  • Apply a spread of about half a metre which will cover the spread of the young roots.
  • Mulch also slows weed competition so that means the value of applied water is all going to your plants.
  • Another step to give young trees a good start is to apply a wetting agent. This will aid the movement of water down to the root zone where it's needed.
