Story Title: Clean Water
Broadcast Date: 3rd March 2012
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Trevor reveals the expert tips and tricks for keeping pond water clean and free of algae.
Tips and Facts
- If your pond is green it is probably because your fish excrement levels are creating a high nutrition base that is boosting the algae growth. Make sure you have a reasonable filtration unit to absorb impurities.
- Adding a gravel base to your pond will provide an increased surface area allowing for beneficial nitrate eating bacteria to proliferate.
- A natural or biological plant filter is also important. If you can flow water from the pond through plant roots you will strip the water of excess nutrients. This effectively starves the algae of food, reducing the impact of algae in the pond.
- If you already have significant algae problems applying a fine zeolite powder in the water will effectively absorb and starve the algae and very quickly clean your water.
