The Fruits of Autumn

Episode: 9
Title: The Fruits of Autumn
Broadcast: 9th May
Presenter: Melissa King

Melissa shows delicious fruits that you can grow in your garden every autumn.

  • Quince, although looking like a fat lumpy pear, have been cherished for centuries for their unique tart flavour and wonderfully fragrant fruit.
  • ‘Smyrna’ is a variety of quince that is a golden yellow colour. The flesh, when cooked, turns pink and it also displays beautiful soft pink spring blossoms.
  • Quinces are closely related to apples, their growing requirements are very similar – so give them full sun and fertile well-drained soil.
  • Quinces can be eaten raw when they are over-ripe, but they’re delightful when poached with sugar and spices, baked in desserts or made into jelly or jam.
  • The crab apple is an excellent addition to the garden with its gorgeous spring blossoms, attractive autumn foliage colour and a show display of fruit that you can enjoy both in the garden and in crab apple jelly.
