Handy Hint-Roses

Story Title: Handy Hint-Roses
Episode: Ten
Date: May 8th 2010
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Winter is the time for pruning roses. Trevor has a couple of tips that will have your roses looking spectacular.

Tips:

  • Wait until it's cold and your roses have started shedding foliage before cutting them.
  • With winter pruning, prune hard removing 75% of the foliage. Spring, Summer and Autumn can be lighter, taking smaller amounts off to shape only and dead head.
  • Any large wounds should be painted but this really only applies with very mature older roses undergoing major surgery.
  • Always use the cleanest secateurs and make sure your blade is sharp. This is critical to long term health as it stops crushing stems and leaving them open for disease to get in.
  • Lastly, give the bushes a feed immediately after feeding. Use something organic like blood and bone which acts as a soil health tonic and stimulates strong healthy root growth. Remember regular pruning and feeding with roses produces the biggest best quality shrubs and flowers.
