The Ultimate Playing Surface

Episode: 2
Title: The Ultimate Playing Surface
Broadcast: 12th September 2015
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

This story explores what goes into the ultimate playing surface, after all if you can get an understanding of how professional turf managers keep the grass green and looking good despite 40 grown men running all over it, you can keep your patch of grass green with the dog running all over it.

  • This 100-year-old Fremantle oval is where the Dockers currently train but modern football is a very professional sport and they are about to move to a new purpose built training facility just a few km down the road.
  • The key thing here is that a professional sport requires a state of the art training facility as this one is the biggest project and will be the best in Australia. If you’ve got a junior footy team at home, this is the way to set up the back lawn to handle the wear and tear.
  • The facility is going to be state of the art when training, but it’s all about turf variety; Greenacres Turf farm, just south of Perth, grows that variety. Durable while maintaining that good green look, it’s safe to assume that Greenacres is the place to go when it comes to turf.
