Garden hoses may be the most valuable tools a gardener should have and without them gardens just won't work in our environment. But they are also the most frustrating of all the tools because if not selected and cared for correctly they can split, leak and waste water. Here’s Trevor’s guide to the best hose and the best way to care for them.
- For a start, hoses look the same but are very different and buying the cheapest price can be the biggest mistake. Some have many internal layers and they are generally very flexible and pliable, the cheaper ones have a hollow or solid wall of plastic and tend to be stiff and cannot be folded easily. These are most affected by freezing cold and if they are run over they split, leaking down the driveway or wasting water.
- The best investment you can make is a quality hose on a hose reel, preferably a retractable hose reel. This means there is no risk of the hose being run over and damaged and no hassles folding a hose after every use.
- The right hose for the right location also makes a big difference, so if you have a small courtyard garden you only need a 10m hose. A mid sized garden will typically use a 20m and a large garden needs a 30m hose.
- The ability to get them on retractable hose reels is now possible thanks to the work done by an Australian company that leads the way in irrigation products, Holmans. They have developed a retraction system that uses a layering guide system to avoid tangles of kinks ensuring the hose retracts fully every time, this not only saves the hose and hassles but its also a safety issue, the number of injury’s caused by people tripping on hoses laying around is scary.
- Make sure your hoses are kept off the ground, retractable reels protect hoses dramatically increasing life span and helping avoid annoying leaks.
