Herbs for Planting Now

Story Title: Herbs for Planting Now
Episode: Two
Broadcast Date: 10th March 2012
Presenter: Chloe Thomson

Having home grown herbs in the garden is not only convenient when you suddenly realise you need some basil when you’re cooking, it also saves you money and tastes a lot better than what you’ll get from the supermarket.

Tips and Facts

  • Chloe’s top tip for growing herbs is to group them according to their watering and sun requirements.
  • Mediterranean style herbs like sage, thyme and marjoram thrive in the hot summer sun if they are watered regularly, but don’t like wet feet over winter.
  • Asian style herbs like coriander and mints prefer semi shade conditions (particularly in hot summer) and have higher watering needs.
  • Mints have the habit of taking over the garden, Chloe suggests growing them in pots.
